PRACTICES (2025) DOORS (2025) - 17 de outubro 2025, 19h00, TYPOGRAPHIA COWORK, Campo dos Mártires da Pátria 144 A, 4050-368, Porto

A series of collective visual essays, with no pre-defined order, dedicated to the re-use of salvaged building components. This practice is as old as construction itself, but is often overlooked in favour of the continuous application of new products provided by a rapid production system based on constant technological developments.

Each essay is based on the observation of inbetween moments (intermédios) in the lives of components — uses between production and final disposal — in search of the qualities that determine each re-use. It highlights the materiality of re-use, such as the richness of detail, aesthetics, texture, shapes, changes in function, marks of use or wear that illustrate previous lives, invisible stories, hidden meanings, values and emotions. It sheds light on distinct re-use cultures (formal and informal), which emerge from processes deeply linked to people and actions, and to social, economic and political contexts. It points out the specificities of construction processes that are often not pre-designed, or led by instruction manuals.

Without dogmatic restrictions, there can be the acceptance of the blurring of boundaries and deconstruction of prejudices that were unconsciously present at the beginning of the research.

In an interdependent relationship, the visual discourse and the written notes provide critical readings of various universes of use. By recreating interconnections with what we build and rebuild — as in architecture, scenography, sculpture and other areas of the everyday material world — these publications challenge the reader’s aesthetic lexicon.

The printed format implies a synthesis and sequential organisation of ideas, which translates into a simplified version of the wealth of themes and the complexity of connections that emerge during the research and editing process. The order in which the ideas are organised in each essay reflects an intention in light of the moment in which it is materialised.

Without an introduction or conclusion, each essay is an inbetween moment in the ongoing research into re-use. Other perspectives and themes are pending.

The intention of transposing the theme of re-use in construction to the physical support of each INTERMÉDIO is to seek coherence between content and materialisation, articulated by graphic design, printing on paper discarded by the printer and reversible binding.

I am neither myself nor the other,
I am something in between.
The pillar of the bridge of boredom
That goes from me to the Other.

PRACTICES
Re-use practices, inherently linked to construction itself, have persisted with resilience through various expressions: cultural, aesthetic, economic, technological, social or political.
This essay places side by side examples of re-use based on historical and heritage value, vernacular culture or informal use of opportunity, conceived in formal architectural design methods or self-built. These cases all originate exclusively from Portugal, seeking to highlight the diversity of local approaches.

DOORS
Doors, originally designed to establish borders or passageways, are one of the architectural elements in the world of construction with the greatest rate and variety of re-use.
This essay, intentionally confined to Portuguese territory, goes through some examples of these cultures of door re-use, to make visible the stories of previous lives and new applications.
